A Hot Berkeley Startup is Transforming the Way Hockey Players Train

Coaches have been telling players to play “heads up” hockey for years. Heads up hockey makes players better passers, better goal-scorers, and better playmakers, as it results in better on-ice vision and awareness. The 600,000 youth hockey players in America have each heard their coach yelling “keep your head up,” practice after practice. “Heads up hockey is one of those things you need to learn ... to play safer, smarter hockey every time you put on skates,” explains Ron Wilson, head coach of America’s Mens’ Ice Hockey Team in the 2010 Olympics.

Unfortunately, current methods to learn to play heads up are limited. Coaches may yell at their players to keep their heads up, but they can’t be there to remind their players to play heads up every time they look down. The market currently offers little more than bulky pieces of foam that a player attaches to the bottom of his or her helmet, completely blocking the view of the puck and creating situations that would never be experienced in a real game.

This problem, and its lack of practical solutions, have affected countless youth hockey players, including SportVue’s co-founder James Li. James, who grew up in Virginia, spent years devoted to ice hockey but never achieved his goals of becoming a Division 1 athlete. “I’d practice shooting and stickhandling for hours a day, but during the games I wasn’t making plays or scoring goals,” recalls James. “I realized, at age 16, that my issue was my inability to keep my head up.”

After the heartbreaking realization that he’d never be a D1 athlete, James channeled his energy towards entrepreneurship, with a goal of ultimately solving the problem that held him back. Alongside co-founder Pedro Pachuca, James launched SportVue (http://sportvue.co/). The two are currently sophomores at UC Berkeley’s M.E.T. Program. They met when Pedro (a California native) was visiting the East Coast. Pedro and James found that they shared the same love towards the intersection of technology and business. They look forward to disrupting the sports landscape, starting with HockeyVue.

“SportVue’s first product, HockeyVue, is designed to help youth athletes play heads up hockey,” explains Pedro. “After frequent use, players will learn to comfortably control the puck with their peripheral vision and develop a habit of playing heads up.”

HockeyVue, which features proprietary algorithms, emits a soft, non-intrusive light in a player’s peripheral vision when he or she looks down. This light reminds the player to look up. With a customizable warning angle and time delay, HockeyVue adjusts to any player’s skill level. Brad Winsdor, Vice President of House League at Peoria’s Youth Hockey Association, notes, “[HockeyVue] sounds really useful, and I really like the idea that it is adjustable,” referring to the customizable warning angle and time delay. “I’d love to try it.”
